English Conversation Strategy #10: You Did?

You did? used to express interest or surprise or just as a sign that you are listening to your interlocutor. You did?, you can understand from the tense it is past tense alias past form (second verb). So from here you know that You did? is used when you respond to the story of your interlocutor who is a past story (which has passed).

Contoh:
A. I passed my final exam.
B. You did?
A. I had a nice, relaxing day at the beach last weekend.
B. You did? Did you go swimming? A. No, but I went snorkling...

In conversation, you can also say Did you? to show that you're listening.
